LECTUREI——THEPTOLEMAICERA

BeforeIbegintolectureuponthePhysicalandMetaphysicalschoolsofAlexandria,itmaybebetter,perhaps,todefinethemeaningofthesetwoepithets。Physical,weshallallagree,meansthatwhichbelongsto[Greektext:phusis];natura;nature,thatwhich[Greektext:

But,accordingtothesedefinitions,thewholehistoryofAlexandriamightbetous,fromonepointofview,aphysicalschool;forAlexandria,itssocietyanditsphilosophy,wereborn,andgrew,andfed,andreachedtheirvigour,andhadtheiroldage,theirdeath,evenasaplantorananimalhas;andaftertheyweredeadanddissolved,theatomsofthemformedfoodfornewcreations,enteredintoneworganisations,justastheatomsofadeadplantoranimalmightdo。
