WhenhandsomeyoungRichardFieldhewasveryhandsomeandveryyoung

announcedtoourassembledcompanythatifhisturnshouldreallycometotellusastory,thestoryshouldbenoinventionofhisfancy,butapageoftruth,achapterfromhisownlife,inwhichhimselfwastheheroandalovely,innocentgirlwastheheroine,hiswifeatoncelookedextremelyuncomfortable。Shechangedtherecliningpositioninwhichshehadbeenleaningbackinherchair,andshesaterect,withahandcloseduponeacharmofthechair。

Wewereahouseparty,nobrief\"week-end\"affair,butagatheringwhoseperiodformostoftheguestscoveredagenerousandleisurelytendays,withenoughdeparturesandarrivalstogivethatvarietywhichisnecessaryamongeventhemostentertainingandagreeablepeople。Ourskilfulhostesshadassembledusinthecountry,beneatharoofofNewYorkluxury,aluxurywhichhascomeintheselaterdaystobesomuchmorethanprincely。Byday,thegroundsaffordedusbothgolfandtennis,thestablesprovidedmotorcarsandhorsestorideordriveoveradmirableroads,throughbeautifulscenerythatwasembellishedbyamagnificentautumnseason。Atnightfall,thegreathouseitselfreceivedusinthearmsofsupremecomfort,fedussumptuously,andafterdinnerministeredtoourmiddle-agedbodieswithchairsandsofasofthehighestdevelopment。

Theplandevisedbyourhostess,Mrs。Davenport,thatastoryshouldbetoldbyoneofuseachevening,hadmetwithcourtesy,butnotIwithimmediateenthusiasm。ButMrs。Davenporthadchosenherguestswithherusualwisdom,andafterthefirstexperiment,storytellingprovedsosuccessfulthatnoneofuswouldhavereadilyabandonedit。WhenthetimehadcomeforRichardFieldtoentertainthecompanywiththepromisedtalefromhislifeexperience,hishopeofescapingthisordealhadaltogethervanished。
